Description : Occhio del Riciclone (ODR) – founder of the Belt Bag upcycling handbags and accessories Italian brand – is a social cooperative that proposes a circular economy model that focuses on the enhancement of both people and things. Since the beginning, ODR has made the values of socio-environmental sustainability its own. As a social cooperative, we aim for integration within the labor market of individuals belonging to disadvantaged categories by targeted trainings and professionalization courses capable of giving value to the skills and abilities of each person involved. For what concerns environmental sustainability, our production model focuses on the enhancement of end-of-life company materials, pre and post-consumption. The cooperative’s activity consists in the recovery and reuse of corporate waste materials that are enhanced through an artisanal upcycling process that leads to the creation of new fashion accessories. The characterizing element of our brand is represented by the recovery of safety belts that become the basis of all our lines of accessories and bags. The recovery and enhancement of safety belts is made possible thanks to the structured collaboration with car demolition plants throughout Italy who provide the cooperative with the belt recovery service. The recovery of seatbelts is an important element in terms of sustainable production as it allows us to avoid landfilling and incineration of belts during the demolition of cars, thus avoiding higher dioxin rates and pollution in the air. Currently, we recover and reuse over 1000 kg of belts every year which correspond to the recovered belts from 1750 vehicles. In parallel with the enhancement process of safety belts, we also use textile waste to create our products. Over the years we have received donations from various italian companies in the fashion sector, such as: CERRUTI 1881, GIARDINI SPA, PANTEX TESSUTI and DRAGONI who have provided us fabrics and leatherette for a total of 1300 kg in 2019 and 3,300 kg in June 2020, which was then used for the creation of bags and fashion accessories for the Belt Bag brand and for corporate merchandising. By maintaining a coherent focus on environmental sustainability, we have launched a structured collaboration with an important Italian player in the collection of used clothing. In fact, thanks to the collaboration with the HUMANA People to People cooperative we were able to re-circulate and give new life to the denim from the jeans belonging to their collection that would otherwise end up in landfills with considerable environmental impacts The metal, plastic components, and the internal support TNT are new, but also in this case the attention to environmental sustainability is maximum. In fact, the suppliers of TNT and small plastic parts are certified regarding the use of recycled plastic for the production of their articles. An example is HELENTEX SPA or APC SRL. ODR also organizes workshops on the creative reuse of various types of materials with the aim of raising awareness among companies, individuals, and educational and professional institutions on environmental and social issues. Our upcycling model, on the other hand, makes environmental sustainability its <em>leitmotiv</em>. In fact, in addition to facing the problem of the continuous production of textile waste, it focuses on the durability of the products. It is not a coincidence that the main material is recovered from the use of safety belts which have characteristics of very high durability (its maximum load is 2 tons). Furthermore, our model focuses on the social and relational aspects through collaborations and synergies with assistance centers for disadvantaged categories. Finally, another aspect of innovation is connected to cultural innovation: our work aims to raise awareness among companies and individuals about the importance of changing our consumption styles. Through the exchange of knowledge and targeted laboratories on recycling, we want to contribute to the diffusion of upcycling artisanal products by generating in the final consumer a new paradigm shift where reuse-recycling and reduction, in addition to attention to social issues, are the keywords of our mission of sustainable entrepreneurs.
